Which option are you using in simple-scan? There are a few:

"Single page"
"All pages from feeder"
"Multiple pages from flatbed"

If you choose the 3rd option, then you will experience this.
If you chose the 2nd, then perhaps we have an issue that can be 
investigated.

Could you also let us know the output of:

scanimage -A
