A good rule of thumb is not to buy something recent.
Btw, someone is maybe going to add support for that scanner since it is a
new Genesys chip and the specs are available.

Being serious for a moment, this is not HP tech support. If HP doesn't
provide a driver ( I don't know if they do or not, I didn't look ) then
_someone_ has to write one. And many of these companies aren't
forthcoming with design specs. This means someone has to by the equipment,
reverse engineer the protocol, then write the software. Keep in mind that
these people are _not_ employed by HP to do this. If you really need
support for this scanner and no one in the development community has
written one, then you need to complain to HP. However, this is just my
$.02.

Many of the packages that are available with Linux are far better
than their Windows counterparts - and they're free.
Please, please don't ask me to buy another scanner when I have a
top-of-the-line HP scanner and there's no support for it. HP is one of
the world leaders in scanning equipment, and this type of hardware is
widespread and needs to be supported.

I suspect that things are about to change big time.<br>

I cannot see that the likes of Acer / Dell / ..... are going to take
machines to market with Ubuntu pre-installed if there are going to be
continuing fundamental problems with printer and certainly scanner
support. Printers are generally not an issue, scanners can be. When
HP has the present range of scanners being effectively not usable then
I get the idea that something is wrong. Not with Linux but with HP.<br>

Microsoft has just failed big time with an operating system called
Vista. People are now staying with XP where in five days time there
will be no support unless there is a huge change of face. They did not
read the market. Twice. Perhaps HP will go through the same learning
curve. It all depends on whether or not there are real alternatives to
their products ............... I have used HP products for years and
years. Since their global pricing policy is a joke and their products
will not work I am now faced with finding other vendors ........ It is
a lot cheaper to keep an existing customer than it is to acquire a new
one ......... <br>
