Allan, thanks for the reply. I am getting closer.<br>

hplipopensource.com says that my printer/scanner HP deskjet F4480 is
supported, by the
version of HPLIP that is installed by default on my system. Ubuntu 9.04<br>
<br>
I installed hplip-gui with synaptic pkg mgr. run HP device Manager.
USB device not discovered.<br>
This even though I can print with the printer, which was set up by
CUPS, I think, when I plugged the cable into the USB port.<br>

Thanks for your help. Here is all the stuff I found out from my
diagnostic efforts.<br>
