I got it.<br>
My Linux (Elementary OS Freya(based on Ubuntu 14.04)) uses Sane
Backends 1.0.23.<br>
After installing Sane Backends 1.0.26 I can use brightness and
contrast, and the scan quality is much better.<br>

I wrote a Sane GUI (OSX & Linux) for my HP ScanJet 2300C.<br>

The 2300C uses Sane genesys.<br>
In OSX I can use brightness and contrast, in Linux I get
"unrecognized option brightness".<br>
