Yes, that would make the test un-interesting. 

The original ring benchmark was not restricted by the peculiar Shootout
measurement technique, and timed both process creation and message
sends separately, within the code.

Seems like the same code could be used for a number of different tests:

- process creation
 send one message to prove all the processes are still there

- message send
 2 processes M message sends (producer-consumer) 

- message send 2 
 5000 processes M message sends
 just to see the message send performance degrade
