I'm not sure how and if such a rewrite would even run on BeOS's and
maybe some other hobby os's that tuxmath is running fine at atm.
Maybe take a look at scummvm and how they handle portabilitys over
several platforms (although I don't think they have something simular
for java(applets)).
In one point of the future (if Haiku doesn't catch up) it could be that
BeOS won't be supported due to having several library dependecies. If
you don't have a problem with that (not that you'll loose that much
users anyhow ;) ) it probly would be ok to move forward and choose
something else then SDL to write your app against.

Just my qaurter of a cent. ;)
