<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">I need some help. I'm a linux newbie and am trying to get ubuntu 6.06 (beta flight 7) to boot from my Silicon Image 3114 PCI-SATARAID controller. I'm using a striped (RAID 0) configuration.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">First, a big THANK YOU for putting together the fakeRAID HOWTO. It would be impossible for me to configure my RAID setup without it. I would have never figured it out.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">...but I have one problem: The system doesn't recognize the RAID array at boot time.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">When trying to boot from the array, I get an "Error 15: file not found" after the grub savedefault command runs. It then pops me into the grub editor to fix it. If I remove savedefault from the script and boot, I get a graphical ubuntu splash screen, but it doesn't get very far. "Mounting root file system" hangs.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">When the boot routine drops to the BusyBox shell, I see:</FONT>

<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">dm-mod</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">no block devices found</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">/dev/sda1: read failed after 0 of 1024 at 14610293812: Input/output error Unable to find volume group 'sil_agafaiabfeab1</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">ALERT! /dev/mapper/sil_agafaiabfeab1 does not exist. Dropping to shell!</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">When I'm at the shell prompt, I can manually execute</FONT> <FONT FACE="Times New Roman">"modprobe -q dm-mod" and it doesn't give me the "no block devices found" message. It just goes to the next shell prompt without any message. Next, I run "dm-raid -ay" and the raid device is found and listed on the console. I then 'exit' the shell and it boots successfully!!</FONT></P>
<P><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">So, what do you think the problem might be?</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">Here's how I got where I'm at:</FONT>

<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">I performed all of the steps in the howto. When installing ubuntu on the array, I let the graphical installer partition and format the array.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">One minor difference when I was performing the steps, when installing dmraid into the new OS, here:</FONT>

<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">apt-get install ubuntu-base linux-386 ubuntu-desktop dmraid grub</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana"># when prompted whether you want to stop now, say no (we will later be fixing the issue that the system is talking about)</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana"># when prompted whether to create a symbolic link, say yes.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">I did not get question to create a symbolic link here. So, I don't know if I have the link I need or not.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Verdana">Of course, I'd really appreciate any help - I'm just getting into Linux and starting out with ubuntu. I'm really excited because the thing just looks great. If I can make it over this speedbump, I'll be leaving Windows for sure!</FONT></P>
