Subsequent to submitting this report, I wrote a comprehensive SHMEM Detective 
Program.  The upshot (from IPC_STAT and SHM_STAT on each of the 16 existing 
SHMEM segments reported by "ipcs -a") is that all of the existing shmem items 
are related somehow to the gnome desktop and to related background services.  
Please ignore this Bug Tracking Report.

Thanks for your efforts in keeping Debian viable on a 2000-vintage G4 PPC Mac 
tower (M7826LL/A).  It may be slower than more recent systems, but It's Paid 
For - 12 years ago.  It still runs well - in fact, the BLAS test programs 
achieve a 750Mips rate (on a 350MHz processor).
