No, the machine does support 686, and normally I run 2.6.24-1-686. 
However, the only way to get the machine to boot right now is using the 
debian rescue cd + chroot, which uses a different kernel

To be sure, I zapped all my ramdisks, and then re-created them from inside 
a chroot into my normal system, from the debian rescue cd. The same 
problem remains

OK, looks like I might be confused. I'll re-run dpkg-reconfigure on the 
kernel tonight, and check it really is using yaird as I thought it was. 
(I've tried several different things...)
