Dear Debian Med packaging team,

I am herewith looking for somebody to take over the gwyddion Debian
packaging efforts. Gwyddion is a Scanning Probe Microscopy visualization and
analysis tool. I packaged it many years ago out of personal need, but
already for some years my research topics have changed and I am no longer
using gwyddion. Furthermore Real Life keeps me too busy, thus I feel, that
it would be better if somebody with a little more time than me and who
actually uses this software could tagke over.

Gwyddion is maintained in Debian Med SVN and generally should be in good
shape, I believe. Initally, Steffen Moeller was a great help in setting up
the whole packaging and tutoring me. Charles Plessy also gave a helping
hand. Recently, Andreas Tille was so kind to give it a rework in terms of
changing the build system from cdbs to dh, including fixing a lot of
long-standing packaging imperfections. As far as I can see, this worked out
perfectly. Only one inconsistency with Debian policy remains (which probably
existed from the very beginning - see changelog in SVN for further details).
These changes are not yet released to unstable due to the freeze and my lack
of time. Generally gwyddion in Debian is currently one release behind
upstream. Upstream releases happen regularly every few months, the next
upstream release is scheduled to happen soon [1] possibly requiring some
extra packaging work as module bundling has been changed. In case of
questions or problems, upstream has always been extremely responsive,
friendly and helpful in any issues that had turned up during the years. So
all in all, gwyddion should not be too much of a burden for a new maintainer.

If necessary, I will happily provide help in the beginning for the new
maintainer and/or answer any question as good as I can, but I would really
appreciate not having to continue packaging gwyddion.

Thanks a lot and best regards,

Jan
