The texinfo problem doesn't exist in stable, which has 4.7.  And if the
problem existed in stable, it would not be fixed, either, since no
updates to stable are allowed except security updates.

Of course it's just a workaround, you would have to reinstall them
again.  But a fixed package will be available "soon".

In the mail where you reported this, the error message is:

Error: `tex -ini  -jobname=xmltex -progname=xmltex &latex xmltex.ini' failed

However, when I install xmltex on a system with tetex-2.0.2 (e.g. on
sarge), the message is

running `etex -ini   -jobname=xmltex -progname=xmltex &latex xmltex.ini' ...

which is successful.  The difference is that on your system, tex is used
instead of etex.  Could it be that you have changed or refused an update
of xmltex's configuration files?
