There aren't any more details.  You enter

sample-client -s test

then enter

S: Q1JBTS1NRDUgTE9HSU4gRElHRVNULU1ENSBOVExNIFBMQUlOIEFOT05ZTU9VUw==

and then it prints

sasl-sample-client: Decoding data from base64: bad protocol / cancel

I just reproduced it.  I also explained in the original submission why
this happens, and that hasn't been fixed in the latest source.
