This problem has been reported upstream at [1], [2] and [3]. It does not
seem to exist in sarge, neither in 2.6.0. Since 2.6.1 is right around
the corner, effort will not be put into making a fix for 2.4.x.

To prevent data loss, deletion of contact lists is not recommended.
Also, it is generally safer to add new contacts to your main contact
list.

It is possible to manually remove contact lists, especially if you don't
care for their contents. The "aliased" contact lists use the common
database file ~/.evolution/addressbook/local/addressbook.db, whereas the
"Personal" addressbook uses
~/.evolution/addressbook/local/system/addressbook.db. Inspect file sizes
and creation dates to make sure this statement is correct. The command
"gconftool -a /apps/evolution/addressbook" shows all the address book
sources. <source>-entries with relative_uri="" are broken, and can be
manually removed using for example gconf-editor. Finally the
~/.evolution/addressbook/local/addressbook.db and
~/.evolution/addressbook/local/addressbook.db.summary can be deleted
(moved somewhere else).

Remember that this manual can lead to further data loss. Always back up
your data and use extreme care when editing. Useful ways to back up your
data is to run "evolution --force-shutdown", recursively copy
~/.evolution and dump gconf with "gconftool -R /apps/evolution >
evolution-gconf-backup".

The problems described above may also occur with calendars.
