Reopening this bug.

This option is missing from the nautilus manpage, as are those listed
below excepting "--help" and "--version".


I still feel that the application should properly sense its environment,
and not open a desktop outside of a GNOME context.  Relying on user
input is a crutch.

I still feel that this behavior should be specifiable from within
Nautilus.
