There is so much that the whole scroll buffer is occupied, so one
cannot even scroll back to see how it all started.

Maybe it thinks everybody is always online.

By the way, upon purge:
Removing gnome-panel-data ...

This is defined in ISOlat1.ent in sgml-data pkg.

This file is in docbook-xml.


Now looking at the dependencies you can see gnome-panel-data depends on
scrollkeeper, which depends on docbook-xml, which depends on sgml-data.
So everything is here.
Moreover, as you are the first and only person with this problem (since
a while GNOME 2.6 is in unstable), i am sure there is no problem in
gnome-panel, but that your xml catalog is broken. You could try
rebuilding it using update-xmlcatalog.

The "Failed to parse default value" you see at removal is a know an very
minor bug (#240929). I've got a patch but waiting for some more stuff to
upload.
