Sorry for the delay replying but chiark ate some mail :/

The bug is still here the version of gnome panel is now 2.6.2-1

I am using the "Head" in the X11 sense. My X server is set up to have two
heads ie it has two screen sections in the XF86Config file. I have two
desktops one on each head. On Desktop 1 on Head 1 right clicking on a panel
and selecting "Properties" works correctly. On Desktop 2 on Head 2 the same
action always causes the gnome-panel to crash.

Doing "tail -f .xsession-errors" when I reproduce the crash shows,

The program 'gnome-panel' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 19990 error_code 8 request_code 56 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

at exactly the same time as the crash happens so they are definitely
related.

The video card detected as an ATI Radeon VE/7000 and is running in 16 bit
colour due to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=236245
