I know. This option has always been on.
The one that was not turned on was the "Run as login shell", but it
didn't help solve the problem.

Yeah, it stopped after an upgrade, don't know exactly when.

Ok. How could it possibly update utmp if the program is not setgid?
Doesn't xterm only update the utmp because of it being setgid?
Or does gnome-terminal call some other program to update it?
