The mixer applet does recognise local devices only.
When used in a applicationserver/ xterminal environment the mixer-applet
cannot control the sound device, because the sound device is located on a
remote (xterminal) system. This is a similar to the X Windows configuration, where a application does send its outout to a server.
Splitting up the mixer-applet in a server and client part will solve
the problem.
I do classify this as bug and not a wish, because the X Windows System is working in this server client way since the early beginning. Running xterminals with application servers has been a long standing tradition among unix systems.
The mixer applet violates this basic understanding since it does not take
into account the usage in xterminal environments which renders part of
the gnome destop (sound ) unusable.
