I've upgraded Nautilus from 2.4, and I no longer get thumbnail icons for
most .jpg and .png files. Instead, I get a generic "JPG" or "PNG" icon.
This is not consistent for all directories though. Sometimes, when I
switch to "Image Collection" mode (which always generates and displays
proper thumbnails), and then back to "Icon" mode, I also get thumbnails
there. Sometimes the icons appear after I reload the directory.
Sometimes they don't.
The image files which I want to have thumbnailed are all smaller than
the maximum size limit for icons. However, I noted problems when I
tried to modify that value from gconf. It would turn into a boolean
value when I clicked on it; only when I reset it to the system default
of 3MB did a reasonable value appear in the field again.
