Bug#301980: sarge: changing theme causes gdm to restart

A basic install of sarge on an IBM thinkpad T23 using the savage driver
with XFree86 version 4.3.0.1.  When gdm starts changing the theme to '6.
DebianRed' then changing to 'a. Smokey-Blue' and clicking on the theme
menu causes gdm to crash and restart.  Not all paths of changing theme are
effected but there do appear to be some others that cause this.
