 It clutters the desktop if one adds such .desktop files, yet it might
 be useful for sysadmins to do so.  Perhaps they want to add a link to a
 particular NFS folder, or Samba mount?  Perhaps they want a link to an
 application?

 Yes, other ways exist to achieve the same result, but it's an option
 under other, and it mimics Windows-style links on the desktop.

 I don't want the default Debian desktop to be cluttered, yet I think it
 would make a nice feature to permit people doing so, much like they can
 clutter a $HOME with dotfiles I won't ever use.
