>From a release point of view, the Ubuntu way of providing a pure -gtk
version is not an option for Debian. It works by creating a *new source
package* [1] and copy&pasting code from gnome libs to the evince source [2].
Upstream is interested in providing a way to build the package without
needing all gnome dependencies, but won't use the Ubuntu patch for
that. If a less problematic solution is implemented, I would be happy to
provide such a Gtk-only evince package, but this will be too late for
etch.

Footnotes:
[1] Every security issue in evince will need to be fixed twice then!
[2] That means one needs to keep track where serious gnome problems are
solved, to adapt the parts in the new evince source.
