Bug#423713: X-problem after apt-get upgrade

Package: gdm
Version: 2.6.0.8-1sarge2

Attached is the error message in /var/log/gdm/:0.log,
which is what comes on the terminal window.

The problem came up as follows.

I tried to upgrade ('sudo apt-get update', then upgrade),
probably from 'sarge', (3.x) to the new one (4.0):
I say 'probably' because I think I tried this earlier,
but could not do the 'apt-get dist-upgrade' because of
too little disk space in /var/something... : this same
problem occurred here too, btw.

But, after the upgrade, I could no longer play
freecell, and when I rebooted (to see if the problem
might go away) X never came back. The error message
(attached) mentions a missing module (mga_hal).
Googling for this error message shows that the latest
bug on this was in 2004: I don't know what to do with that info.

I did notice that I still run kernel 2.4.18,
whereas the gdm version is 2.6.

While I acknowledge that I may have messed up,
it would be nice if X would stay alive despite my error.

Any information to get X back is very much appreciated.
