A couple of days ago I installed the latest experimental kernel (3.6.39) and since then everything is fine, no more crashes. I believe it may be a bug in the video card kernel module (perhaps i915) that causes gnome-settings-daemon to crash. If you have no objections I would like to reassign this to the kernel maintainers.
