Shelters are swamped with lost pets that cannot be reunited with their families because they arent tagged and microchipped. Many pet owners may think that it is only strays and unwanted animals that end up in shelters, but the truth is that many strays are lost pets that were not kept properly indoors or provided with identification.


ID Tags are fine for pets, but they can become lost and separated from the pet. Microchipping your pet is the only 100% reliable pet identification. Microchips are very small, about the size of a grain of rice and lasts for the life of your pet. Implanting the chip is quick and affordable. There are several major brands of microchip and each is affiliated with a pet locator service.


Once youve registered your pet with one of the pet locator services, youve taken a major step to ensuring that if your pet is ever lost, you will be reunited. Sadly, in the US only 14% of lost dogs and 4% of cats are ever reunited with their families. In England, where microchipping is mandatory, 51% of lost dogs are reunited with their owners.


If every pet owner would take this essential step, not only would it go a long way toward easing overcrowding in our shelters, it may help you find your lost pet someday.
