You are wrong.  Debian is very good about supporting an indefinite
upgrade path.  It is *the* useful feature of Debian.  I have been using
Debian since 0.93rc6 and I have only re-installed from scratch once in
that entire time period.  I have this debate with about one package
maintainer per year, and I always win because "thou shalt not wedge
apt" is a core Debian community value!

Learn how to use the dependency system correctly.  Then you will be in a
position of superiority and you can lecture me about bug tracking
etiquette.  If you look at the history of this bug, internal Debian
project members were just as irate as I am at the lack of compatibility
and raised the severity in the same manner, but then they were talked
down as part of a misguided rush to release.  The release cycle is not
the dominant goal of Debian maintenance!
