I'm fine with that, but i don't know enough about the
desktop-environment world to know the specifics of what the "fix up"
should be.

If you want to suggest a concrete change to the .desktop files and
reassign to xscreensaver-desktop, i'd have no objection.

Here's an example .desktop file (sorry for line-wrap with this MUA) from
xscreensaver-data if you want something to consider without fetching and
installing the package:

0 dkg at alice:~$ cat /usr/share/applications/screensavers/ripples.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Ripples
Exec=/usr/lib/xscreensaver/ripples -root
TryExec=/usr/lib/xscreensaver/ripples
Comment=This draws rippling interference patterns like splashing water.
With the -water option, it manipulates your desktop image to look like
something is dripping into it. Written by Tom Hammersley.
StartupNotify=false
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Screensaver;
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
0 dkg at alice:~$
