Thanks Alberts, so you confirm you experience some crashes too.

For the records, I managed to get the gdb trace by running:

  DISPLAY=:0 gdb metacity

in a text console, I mean outside of the X server (Ctrl-Alt-F1), after
setting up the appropriate Xauth credentials.
