Yep; my emails are in here in non-chronological order, took me a while
to discover the evolution workaround.  It's a bit counterintuitive to
have to use what's ostensibly an email client to add calendars though.

No: as I enter the URL, the border of the text box swirls green as if
it's checking the URL as I type, but before I reach the end of the
address the swirling stops, and when I do finish the URL, the "add"
button is greyed out so I can't continue.  The address is of the form:

  https://hostname:9999/some/path/calendarname/

.. and works fine when entered via the evolution workaround.
