That problem would be directly solved at build time without any change
to sources. In Debian it is managed by a binNMU, I don't think it is
different in Ubuntu. But for that mapnik is currently not under DebianGis
umbrella, but individually maintained by

As you can see, it is not updated since a few months, I'd suggest you
to contact him by email and verify what are his programs about the
package. Possibly moving to team maintainance too. It'd be nice
having it under the common d-gis repositories to improve team
maintainance and avoid singletons ;-)
