QGIS support a multitude of data source, both local (on your filesystem)
and network services (like WMS, WFS, PostGIS databases, etc).

There is an issue in the upstream QGIS bug tracker that reports this
same issue: https://hub.qgis.org/issues/9818

That issue mentions that the issue is caused by the
openscenegraph-plugin-osgearth package not being installed.

Can you check that you have openscenegraph-plugin-osgearth installed,
and if not, please install it and try the globe plugin again to see if
that fixes the issue.

If this is the fix, we need to add this dependency to make sure it's
installed.
