Same behaviour here, but normal tapping works if are configured in 
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptiks.conf

If I try to execute from a console using synaptiks 
command, it starts and seems to work, except when try to go to "configure 
synaptiks" from systray icon, it shows a slightly different error message:
