I don't know and frankly it doesn't matter. I've checked konsole, xfce4-
terminal, terminator, xterm and few others (but not gnome terminal). I'm
confident that this problem is not happening in all terminal emulators that I
tried. Hence the problem must be in gnome terminal or may be clipboard manager
interferes. If problem is in gnome terminal I'm not going to suggest upstream
developers to introduce workaround that no other terminal emulator needs.
Again, I do not recognise this as problem in MC. I might be convinced if you
manage to reproduce similar problem in other term. application.
Did you try other locales? (by the way I'm using "en_AU.utf8" as well).
Can you provide sample text that I can use to reproduce (or is it happens with
any text)?
