this is certainly confusing, not least because this text uses the
ambiguous word "trust", but doesn't mean it in the GnuPG sense of
"ownertrust".

how do you see that?

I'm having trouble reproducing this misbehavior on enigmail 1.9 (though
that might be due to my not understanding your point 8 above).  Are you
able to pull the 1.9 package from debian testing to try it out and see
whether the misbehavior is still present there?
