Will it be possible to make a smooth transition later? I am asking because I
really have little packaging experience. Actually, sundials is my very first
go at it :)

I can speak about CVODES only.
We use it in our Newton-type nonlinear model predictive control package that
is written in C, C++, and Fortran. Once it is released, I will make a .deb
package out of it, but I am afraid it is too specific to make it into
mainstream Debian :)
From what I gathered attending a few recent conferences, not many people were
aware of the existence of SUNDIALS and they were eager to try it. So, I
believe the number of applications using SUNDIALS is definitely going to
grow. And I may be mistaken, but I think there is no other free software
alternative for CVODES at the moment.
