Ok, it seems I was a little confused about the change you did
exactly.  It seems it already had it for the 486 and higher
versions, and you only added it for 386.  This explains why I'm
now seeing an exectuable stack again.

So, I'm now pondering if the right solution is to use the -Wa
way, or Bastian's patch.  I'm in favour of the second option, but
on the other hand I dislike the "if ($type eq "elf")" part.
