OK, I'll hold off my NMU intent as you guys are obviously reactive
(frankly, I already knew that so I was mostly playing "heads up").

Please note that my tentative to build the package and a look at
lintian output leads me to propose the attached patch which includes a
few Lintian fixes:

openssl (0.9.8g-8.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload to fix pending l10n issues.
  * Debconf translations:
    - German. Closes: #473477
    - Italian. Closes: #461597
    - Slovak. Closes: #461880
    - Japanese. Closes: #462011
    - Spanish. Closes: #465517
    - Portuguese. Closes: #475439
  * [Lintian] Drop obsolete ${Source-Version} substvar for libssl-dev
    and libssl0.9.8-dbg
    Use ${binary:Version} instead.
  * [Lintian] No longer ignore errors from "make clean"
  * [Lintian] Upgrade debhelper compatibility to 4
  * [Lintian] Use debian/compat to set debhelper compatibility level
