As (one of) the core maintainer(s), the right course of action for you 
would be to (at least) downgrade the RC bug that's causing the autoremoval.

 From https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities:
serious
     is a severe violation of Debian policy (roughly, it violates a 
"must" or "required" directive), or, in the package maintainer's or 
release manager's opinion, makes the package unsuitable for release.

Which means that if it's not a policy violation (which David and you 
agree on), it's your call.
