Found it at [0]. Steps to reproduce:

$ wget -qO test.png https://www.debian.org/Pics/openlogo-50.png
$ ls -l test.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 marius marius 2.0K Feb  5  2011 test.png
$ file -i test.png
test.png: image/png; charset=binary
$ mimetype -M test.png
test.png: image/png
$ mimetype --stdin < test.png
STDIN: text/plain
