Thanks for sharing your efforts.

If you have more time and motivation, you could file a wishlist bug on
the darktable package with some suggested patches; ideally one patch per
feature. 

It wasn't clear from your mail, but it looks like from the patch you
already found that 1.4~rc1 is in experimental.
