This doesn´t work for me.

As after a restart the smbclient will be able to connect, I suspect it is a 
timing issue on network start. For you it might work with IP adresses… but the 
fileserver VM really starts pretty fast on the SSD based Intel Nuc with Skylake 
CPU. That might be the reason that for me it doesn´t even work when I add IP 
of fileserver host there.

So for now on my setup I remove this completely. As long as a fileserver will 
only have network interfaces to networks it serves files to I don´t see a 
problem with that. That sounds like a sane setup anyway to me. Have it just be 
a fileserver for the desired networks and no extra stuff on there.
