Yes. I agree with Jelmer, bug triagging is the best way to start, and
to help. I currently try to focus on stretch, but I have a limited
time.

Don't forget to CC this mailing list when you send mails to
http://bugs.debian.org/.

To build samba, after the git clone, you can use git-buildpackage. I
use this with git-pbuilder to build cleanly on sid (or other Debian
versions).
