Marc, while digging in my can of worms, I'm completely unable to
reproduce this bug you reported.

I think it was either transitory, or induced by something else on the
system you were then using, or whatever else....

On a woody system (same for a sarge system):

root@thot:~# grep MAIL /etc/environment
root@thot:~# grep MAIL ~tintin/.*
root@thot:~#  
root@thot:~# grep ^MAIL /etc/login.defs
MAIL_FILE      .mail/mailbox
root@thot:~# grep MAIL_FILE /etc/login.defs
#   below.  MAIL_FILE defines the $MAIL environment variable as the
#   directory before $MAIL_FILE, and QMAIL_DIR defines the MAIL
MAIL_FILE      .mail/mailbox
root@thot:~# login
thot login: tintin
Password:
Linux thot 2.4.26 #1 SMP ven avr 30 13:23:55 CEST 2004 i686 unknown
