I confirm this bug report, which indeed seems to be a FAQ about passwd
and expect, see the URL given by the bug submitter (thanks) in
http://bugs.debian.org/182605


The attached autopasswd script, from the examples of the expect
program, demonstrates the problem.

autopasswd is aimed to be used like this (as root):

autopasswd <user> <password>

to automatically setup <password> as new password for <user>

When used, it appears to "hang" and finally does not do the job
because indeed passwd prompts before being ready to receive the user
input.

Tomasz (shadow upstream maintainer), do you confirm this bug report
and do you think that something can be done in upstream sources?
