Afaik, dynamically assigned groups never worked with dbus.
Recent versions of hal used pmount for mounting, maybe it worked because
of that. I don't think there is a regression.

Nevertheless, if you need a more dynamic authorization scheme,
ConsoleKit is probably the right way for you, as you already discovered.
