Seems to be a recent change in gnome-icon-theme.

The icon shown is
/usr/share/icons/gnome/22x22/devices/nm-device-wired.png (attached)

It seems, gtk prefers the icon that is shipped by the icon-theme over the one
provided by nm-applet
