Okay I found out why it did not work and I think that the way it is done 
is completely broken. Here is what happens when you cut off ac.

1. An ACPI event is generated in Hardware
2. The kernel informs the user space, udev
3. UDev propagates this event to user space again
4. HAL gets the event and tells user space about it -> PowerDevil
5. PowerDevil decides what to do now and tells HAL about it
6. HAL runs a script that runs a script that runs the pm-powersave 
   script

My problem was, that I did not think about this and did not investigate 
the options in PowerDevil, which however turned out to be the culprit 
here. Looks like Windows to me, damn.

And I'm sorry for the noise and piggybacking this bugreport.
