[Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#604916: network-manager: support for additional configuration

Package: network-manager
Version: 0.8.1-4
Severity: wishlist

It would be nice if (at least for experienced users) network-manager could
enable them to modify some system configurations depending on the connection
profile chosen. Some of this comes naturally through integration with
resolvconf (which automagically sets up a local caching nameserver to use
the nameservers specified in resolvconf, or obtained through dhcp, as
forwarders). Another typical configuration which could be supported is the
setting up of appropriate smarthosts for email delivery, be it via
resolvconf or directly, or proxy servers etc.. Indeed, it would be
desirable to be able to use the information which is obtained by dhcp (or
which could be given by optional fields in the network-manager interface for
setting up connections) for setting up appropriately services or, at least,
environment variables (so that one could write resolvconf scripts to use
them, for example).

As things stand, depending on where I move to work I have every time to
manually set up exim4 to use the appropriate local smarthost, my browser to
use the appropriate local proxy etc., despite network-manager automatically
recognising the appropriate wireless network, and correctly connecting to
it. It would be so much nicer if I could at least optionally attach a shell
script to each network connection, so that everything would be set up just
by choosing it.

Thanks in advance
Giacomo Mulas
