I assumed that first... but: update-alternatives did _not_ create the
symlink /usr/bin/gvim. Though /etc/alternatives/gvim has been maintained
well. The only bizzare thing was that after I purged vim-gtk (for
testing) it still was there but update-alternatives said it was a
symlink with 0 alternatives.

I remember having issues with vim/gvim symlink maintenence in the past,
and I never had time to watch out for bugs in update-alternatives. This
time I will do it.
