Ah-ha!  I never realized that syntax highlighting had this separate
on/off switch.  (I always thought it was merely turned off with
syntax=none or something, and that syntax=foo would turn it back on.)

But it was enabled in 6.x, wasn't it?  At least, it used to Just
Work[TM] out of the box.  Was there any reason for this change?
